Nick Chafey, wearing a red and black plaid shirt, stands at the Oklahoma City National Memorial. Behind him is the reflecting pool and the Field of Empty Chairs, honoring the victims of the 1995 bombing.

Bethany Public Schools athletic trainer Nick Chafey carries a personal connection to the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon — one rooted in both tragedy and hope.

In 1995, when Nick was just four years old, his mother, Rona Linn Kuehner-Chafey, was killed in the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Rona was serving with the Drug Enforcement Administration at the time of the attack..

Nearly 30 years later, Nick continues to honor his mother's legacy through service and remembrance. On Sunday, he served as the On-Course Medical Chairman for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, overseeing 18 medical stations across the 26.2-mile race route.

In addition to his role supporting thousands of runners, this year marked a special milestone for Nick: he introduced his 11-month-old son, Brooks, to the community and the story that has shaped their family’s history.

Reflecting on his mother’s life, Nick describes Rona as kind-hearted, funny, and a natural caretaker — traits he sees reflected today as he shares her story with the next generation.

“We are proud to have Nick as part of our Broncho family,” said Bethany Public Schools officials. “His strength, service, and commitment to honoring the past inspire all of us.”

As Oklahoma remembers those lost and the families forever changed, Nick Chafey stands as a testament to resilience, love, and the enduring power of legacy.
